The best hidden macOS 27 features people aren’t talking about

Apple’s macOS 27 release β€” dubbed β€˜Golden Gate’ by the company β€” is packed with new features, despite Apple saying that this year was more of an evolution than revolution. There are plenty of additions that have got tongues wagging and pens scribbling across the internet.

Yet for every Siri app and Liquid Glass tweak, there are many more upgrades that people are barely talking about. That means that if you don’t dig below the surface, you might miss some of the interesting new ways you can use your Mac once you’ve downloaded and installed macOS 27.

Here, we’ll run through five of our favorite little-known inclusions in the macOS Golden Gate beta. Get to grips with all of them and you’ll have fresh ways to use your Mac on a daily basis.

Visual Intelligence

Previously, Visual Intelligence was only available on iOS. You’d point your iPhone at an object, press the Camera Control, and Visual Intelligence would identify the object or pull out details from an event flyer and add them to your calendar. Now, similar powers can be harnessed on your Mac.

But you might be asking how this will work on a Mac, seeing as you can’t just go up to something and take a picture of it with your laptop. Fortunately, Apple has adapted Visual Intelligence to macOS 27 in a handy new way.

Much like when you take a screenshot, you can drag a box over part of your screen using your mouse. When you let go, you can ask Visual Intelligence to help you with what you have selected. You can ask Siri AI a question about the image and it will respond. You can then go back and forth with the chatbot if you need more information.

If you highlight an event, you can add it to your calendar. Even better, if you use Visual Intelligence on a festival schedule with multiple acts playing at different times, for instance, you can add as many or as few to your calendar as you want, all saved as separate entries with relevant info like the band that’s playing and the stage that you’ll find them on.

This is one of my favorite features in macOS 27 as it’s not only useful, but highly flexible and intelligent. Visual Intelligence is able to understand many different inputs and the contexts surrounding them, turning Siri into much more of the powerful assistant that it was always meant to be.

Automatic password strengthening in Passwords

The best password managers often alert you if your logins stored in the app are weak or compromised, but that usually means updating them to stronger alternatives yourself.

If that requires manually visiting affected websites and changing your login details by hand dozens or even hundreds of times, the task can feel incredibly daunting. Faced with that kind of situation, many people likely just give up, preferring to stick with their untrustworthy passwords rather than go through the hassle of changing them all one by one.

That’s an obvious security risk, and it’s one that macOS 27 has attempted to put right. Although the following change hasn’t had much airtime since the feature was announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, I feel like it could be one of the most important features in the new operating system.

In macOS 27, all you need to do is ask Apple’s Passwords app to fix your dodgy passwords for you. Just one click and it’ll get to work visiting affected websites and updating your logins without you needing to lift a finger.

It’s a great example of how useful AI agents can be, all backed up by Apple’s well-known security and privacy credentials.

Natural language in Calendar

How many times have you opened the Calendar app on your Mac and tried to create a new event with a phrase like β€œMovie night with James tomorrow at 8pm at home,” only to find none of the details β€” such as the time or the place β€” are properly added to the event?

It’s been a recurring problem for years, and a frustrating one, too, as Apple fans have watched other apps race ahead with similar features while Calendar lags behind.

Now, that’s been improved. Changes in macOS 27 mean that you just need to enter an event using the type of natural language that you’d use in an everyday conversation. Any details that Calendar can pick up on β€” like a person, place, time or date β€” will turn gray. Click them and select the suggested detail and they’ll be properly added. This feature understands your context, too, such as where your home is located.

Sure, similar features have been present in rival calendar apps for years, and that could explain why Apple’s Calendar update hasn’t exactly lit the world on fire in the weeks and months since it was announced.

But having this feature is nonetheless an excellent addition for users of the Calendar app. The more naturally you can use your apps, the more effortless they become, allowing you to quickly be done with them so you can get on with what matters in your day. This natural language upgrade for the Calendar app lets you do exactly that.

Of all the clever new features announced last year as part of macOS Sequoia in 2024, iPhone Mirroring was one of the more intriguing. As the name suggests, it mirrors your iPhone onto your Mac’s screen, bringing up a software view of your device where you can open apps, type messages, and basically use everything on your iPhone through the Mac sitting in front of you.

But there was one annoying quirk with this system: you couldn’t resize the iPhone window to use different aspect ratios. That meant any apps you opened on the virtual iPhone were limited in size and failed to make use of your Mac display’s larger proportions.

Thankfully, Apple has fixed that up in macOS 27. Instead of being stuck with the unchanging iPhone window of the past, macOS 27 now lets you drag the on-screen iPhone and change its dimensions as required.

You can now make the iPhone window wider or taller and the content inside the app will automatically adapt. It’s far better than what we had before.

So, if you’d given iPhone Mirroring a try before but were put off by the tiny window you had to work with, macOS 27 could make using your iPhone on your Mac a little more comfortable.

Improved support for ultra-wide displays

Before macOS 27, using an ultra-wide display with your Mac could be a downright pain. Many ultra-wide resolutions were not supported natively in macOS, meaning you had to settle for something that wasn’t quite right for your display, which could in turn negatively affect your macOS experience.

And when competing operating systems like Windows could support ultra-wide monitors in a more comprehensive way, the frustration for Mac users was understandable.

Worse, if you ever unplugged your monitor and then plugged it in again, macOS would forget your previous display settings, forcing you to set up your ultra-wide monitor as needed every single time. If you relied on one of the best MacBooks as your daily driver and you frequently disconnected it from your desk display, this was a regular irritation.

In macOS 27, though, that’s finally a thing of the past. You’ll now be able to run an ultra-wide monitor up to 5K resolution and up to 120Hz refresh rate, meaning far more high-end displays will now work with macOS 27 without a hitch.

And Apple has fixed the disconnection issue so that hooking up your monitor no longer requires you to dial in your settings every time. Instead, macOS remembers your preferences so that no manual adjustments are needed.

That makes this a seemingly small change on the surface, but one that will be appreciated by anyone who owns an ultra-wide monitor and has long struggled with the limitations of macOS.

I'm worried about the future of MacBooks β€” and these M7 chip rumors are to blame

Apple's MacBooks seemingly have some big changes on the horizon. One of the biggest is the rumored MacBook Ultra packing that OLED screen, and this is something to be excited about, don't get me wrong. Well, worries about the price aside, and wider issues around Mac pricing overall, but there's something I'm more concerned about now.

Namely the direction in which Apple is heading with its M-series silicon, following the latest rumor dump from prolific leaker Mark Gurman. In last weekend's Power On newsletter for Bloomberg, Gurman dropped a whole lot of fresh info about Apple's CPU roadmap and the incoming M6, M7 and M8 chips.

The leaker tells us β€” and bear in mind, this is all just rumors, but eye-opening speculation nonetheless β€” that Apple is doing something very different with the next range of M silicon. The M6 will consist of just a vanilla chip, with no more powerful variants, which isn't something Apple has ever done before β€” there's always been a Pro and Max version (if not an Ultra, too).

This is because Apple apparently wants to usher in the M7 series more swiftly, with the M6 debuting late this year and the M7 following in the first half of 2027, just six months (or so) later. The M7 will have a full complement of Pro, Max and Ultra chips, the former two following at the end of 2027, with the Ultra in 2028. Gurman believes this is Apple's current plan and the reason for rushing to get to the M7 is AI.

Cue multiple groans, no doubt. Gurman theorizes: "The reason for this break with tradition: AI. Apple had been planning major neural-processing upgrades for the M7 family and ultimately decided those improvements were important enough to justify accelerating the next generation rather than completing the M6 lineup."

We're further told that beyond this, Apple is "already developing M8 chips with even greater AI capabilities" to land in 2028.

Gurman concludes: "The takeaway is that AI is no longer just another feature Apple's chips need to support. It is now shaping how those products are designed and when they are shipped."

A wise path to follow?

So, what am I worried about here exactly? Obviously there's a strong suggestion that AI is taking much more of a center stage role with Mac chips, and given what's currently going on with MacBooks, I've got to wonder about the wisdom of this β€” and how it might affect Apple's PC sales.

Currently Mac sales are strong and considerably buoyed by the launch of the MacBook Neo in March 2026, a budget laptop that has undoubtedly flown off the shelves. However, Apple's recent price hikes have poured cold water on those sales prospects to an extent, even hitting the MacBook Neo, which went up by $100 in the US (Β£100 in the UK, and AU$150 in Australia).

Granted, while it's odd for a device to get a price rise like this so soon after launch, given the demand around the Neo, it's not going to be sidelined with this increase (although the upper-tier model with 512GB storage now looks shakier and out of budget territory, frankly). The harder pill to swallow is the harsher MacBook Air price hikes, and as we pointed out a few weeks back, some wallet-friendly Windows 11 laptops now look a lot more tempting after Apple's price increases.

Looking on Reddit, it's not hard to find a lot of unhappiness about the MacBook price hikes. There's considerable angst from some people who were thinking of pulling the trigger on a new Apple laptop, and then watched those price increases swoop in, and are now feeling the opposite of buyer's remorse (holdout's regret?). Some of those folks are acting with their wallets, closing them and vowing to wait for a better buying opportunity now that they've missed the boat, as it were.

That could be a long wait, though. Of late, we're hearing a lot of gloomy news about the RAM crisis getting worse later this year, and in 2027 β€” maybe a lot worse. The memory supply situation is what caused Apple to jack up Mac prices, of course, and it's difficult to see how the MacBook maker will continue to weather this storm if it worsens next year, given that its resources in terms of built-up inventory of RAM (or SSDs) are clearly running dry (or have run dry).

Rumors have continued to persist about Apple potentially tapping Chinese memory chip makers for its RAM needs, as an alternative to the big three mainstream suppliers (Micron, Samsung, SK Hynix). That's a worrying development in itself, and it's doubtful whether even Tim Cook can pull off navigating that kind of negotiation before he leaves his Apple CEO role (there are various possible hurdles to clear and governmental complications, put it that way).

Diving into AI headfirst

I don't think any of this bodes particularly well for next year's Mac sales given the prospect of pressure around more price hikes (although yes, other PC makers face the exact same unfavorable conditions). And then we come back to this apparent renewed focus on AI, which hasn't gone down well on Reddit and other social media.

Here's one Redditor who sums all this up neatly: "I was about to buy a new MacBook to replace my M1 Pro with an ailing battery and small storage. But then Apple jacked up the prices by almost 20%. And now they are diving into AI headfirst. It might be time for me to look at Framework laptops."

There's a strong backlash against AI right now, whether that's about sprawling data centers and them chugging huge amounts of power, or Copilot in Windows 11 and indeed Apple Intelligence. So, it's no surprise that the idea of "diving into AI headfirst" has been greeted by a lot of skepticism.

What exactly is Apple Intelligence going to serve up in terms of compelling features in the next year or two? The trouble is that this feels very much up in the air, yet Apple is supposedly building its Mac strategy around this now. It seems like a bit of a leap into the unknown to say the least, and I'm not surprised that it's making Mac fans nervous.

Okay, so this AI focus is still just a rumor, although Gurman is one of the more reliable Apple sources out there, and it appears to be a well enough fleshed-out piece of speculation. Even if it's true, Apple may yet switch away from this course, but for now, I'm struggling to find the logic of shifting to a heavier AI focus so soon.

Maybe the reasons for this will become clearer as we see how Apple Intelligence develops in the near future. However, in the meantime, I think there are reasons to be concerned about Mac sales potentially flagging next year, between disgruntled MacBook holdouts, the continued RAM crisis, and cynicism around Apple's apparent new AI-led approach.

GoPro Mission 1 Pro: One-Minute Review

The Mission 1 Pro is as rugged as you’d expect any GoPro action camera to be, with a highly water-resistant design β€” even without an additional casing β€” and a shock-resistant body that can survive tumble after tumble, but with 8K recording quality it enables you to capture footage with a real cinematic feel.

Thanks to impressive subject tracking and GoPro’s HyperSmooth stabilization tech, the Mission 1 Pro can capture the action smoothly whether you’re wearing it yourself, or following your subject along a trail or down a piste.

Plus, thanks to the new larger 1-inch sensor, low-light video quality is better than ever for a GoPro β€” letting you take advantage of the roughly two hours of 4K 60p recording time available to you on a single charge even as the sun starts to set.

Meanwhile, HLG HDR format and GP-Log2 support, control over ISO, EV, white balance and shutter speed, and the freedom to record in 8K/30p open gate β€” the full height and width of the versatile 4:3 aspect ratio sensor β€” will give you more artistic and post-processing options that make this action camera feel more like a professional piece of kit.

The downside of all this is that the Mission 1 Pro doesn’t come cheap. It’ll set you back $699 / Β£599.99 / AU$1,099.95 if you aren’t already a GoPro member, while members can take advantage of a healthy discount, with prices starting at $599 / Β£509.99 / AU$949.95. This sure is pricey even for one of the best action cameras when DJI rivals cost substantially less, but if you’re going to take full advantage of its cinematic capabilities, it’s certainly one to consider.

The only real disappointment is that its photography capabilities left me wanting. With its optional point-and-shoot camera-style grip I had hoped that the GoPro Mission 1 Pro might perform well as a stills snapper, but it did struggle at times. Hopefully, the ILS model with its Micro Four Thirds lens mount will deliver a more all-round performance when it debuts later this year.

The grip does at least help make the Mission 1 Pro much easier to handle when shooting video, and it feels like a useful upgrade for anyone who plans to use this GoPro as their new vacation camera, and take advantage of its improved video and audio quality, and durable design.

The GoPro Mission 1 Pro is available to buy now for $699 / Β£599.99 / AU$1,099.95 (non-member price, or $599 / Β£509.99 / AU$949.95 for members), while the more basic Mission 1 will cost you $599 / Β£529 /AU$949.95 (non-member price, or $499 / Β£439.99 / AU$799.95). The Mission 1 Pro ILS costs the same as the Pro, but it won’t launch until later in 2026.

Other bundles include one with a point-and-shoot camera-style grip, which I had for my review. This bundle feels quite pricey at $779.99 / Β£679.99 / AU$1,229.95, seemingly with no member discount at the time of writing.

The Mission 1 Pro and Mission 1 share a lot of the same features and hardware, but the Pro version unlocks 8K 60fps footage and 8K Open Gate 4:3 filming for greater editing flexibility. You’ll also unlock slow-mo 4K video at 240fps, and 1080p up to 960fps for more extreme slow-mo shots.

Meanwhile the ILS model is interesting as it takes away some features β€” such as built-in autofocus and the ultra-wide lens of the regular Pro β€” to give you more control, with manual focus control and a Micro Four Thirds (MFT) mount, enabling you to attach a wide variety of lenses for different cinematic effects. If you’re more of a cinematographer than a casual user, the ILS model could be what you’re after.

That said, even the base-model Mission 1 is a fair bit pricier than the GoPro Hero 13 Black β€” our current pick for the best overall action camera. If you care about low-light shots the Mission 1 could be worth the price premium, but for a lot of people who are just looking to capture fun clips of their action sports escapades even the basic model may be overkill.

GoPro Mission 1 Pro: Design

The ideal action camera is one that can handle just about anything you throw at it, and the GoPro Mission 1 Pro GoPro is a camera that’s designed to be pushed to its limits.

If you’re a fan of underwater video, the Mission 1 Pro boasts a design that’s waterproof to 66ft / 20m without the need for a housing β€” plus the hydrophobic lens cover should help keep water splashes and droplets from obstructing your view massively when you’re using the camera above the waves.

It’s also rated to work in temperatures between -20C and 45C, with its power and shoot buttons designed to make them easier to press while wearing the kind of thick gloves that are necessary in frigid climates.

The Mission 1 Pro’s shock-resistant body can also survive tumbles and drops, giving it an almost indestructible feel. While I never pushed the Mission 1 Pro too far, I never felt like I needed to be careful with it.

Moving on from the action-focused aspects, the 2.59-inch OLED rear touchscreen display offers enough real estate for you to easily manage and track your settings while also leaving plenty of room to clearly see your compositions.

Meanwhile, the 1.4-inch front LCD is a good size for vloggers to track what is/isn’t in frame as they talk to camera, with a convenient and concise readout of your shot settings letting you know that you haven’t, for example, accidentally swiped to a different mode while turning the camera 180 degrees.

Included in the box are a lens hood to help reduce glare β€” just note that it can fall off easily, so keep an eye on it, or be prepared to pick up replacements β€” a 2150mAh Enduro 2 battery, an adhesive mount, mounting buckle and a thumb screw.

You’ll need to provide your own microSD card, as there’s no internal storage. The Mission 1 Pro relies on V30 and Class A2-rated microSDs for the best performance; A1 cards will work, but will encode more slowly.

You can pick up a series of attachments for this camera, including ND filters; however, the bigger sensor size of this camera means the Hero 13 Black’s suite of lens attachments can’t be used here, and sadly there aren’t, as yet, equivalent accessories for the Mission Pro 1.

Other GoPro attachments, such as harnesses or helmet/bike mounts, should be compatible, as the Mission 1 Pro relies on the same bracket as models that came before.

Lastly I’ll mention the point-and-shoot camera-style grip attachment, which was supplied to me for testing alongside the Mission 1 Pro and can be purchased separately ($99.99 / Β£89.99 / AU$154.95) or as part of a bundle. The grip is incredibly simple, yet effective at transforming the Mission 1 into something that feels more like a regular point-and-shoot compact.

When it comes to capturing quick videos, such as clips at the beach or at a festival, the grip makes it easy to hold the camera without the risk that your hand will get in the way of the lens, although as mentioned, the Mission 1 Pro doesn’t perform as well as a stills camera β€” more on that below.

GoPro Mission 1 Pro: Performance

To make video capture easier than ever the Mission 1 Pro features a slew of preset capture modes that adjust settings based on your needs, with modes for Vlogging, SportPOV, TimeLapse, Open Gate, SlowMo, Low Light, Dive and plenty more.

You can tweak the settings for each mode to fine-tune your image quality needs, and also manage modes by hiding ones you never use, or adding custom settings that are your go-tos.

For most scenarios, I found the 4K open gate option to be the most versatile. The image quality is solid, and you have the option to reframe the footage to 16:9 or 9:16 later based on your needs β€” plus it’s less of a drain on the battery than shooting in 8K.

Vlog-style recording is made easy thanks to the front screen, and automatic subject tracking that centers you in the frame β€” ideal for casual vloggers who constantly find they steadily drift out of shot unless they pay close attention to the camera they’re holding.

The audio quality is decent too, picking up voices and essential sounds, but cutting out wind noise.

Slow mo is also a lot of fun, though as you’ll see in my example video above, raw untuned footage at resolutions lower than 4K can start to look grainier than is ideal β€” upscaling and/or sharpening the image with editing software is essential to get things to look better.

The larger sensor also helps in low-light conditions, especially with the new Low Light shooting mode. Unsurprisingly, in proper darkness the camera still struggles, but with some illumination remaining the camera performs well in this mode.

Where I’m less convinced of the Mission 1 Pro’s abilities is when it comes to stills photography, which is a massive shame considering you have the option to add the point-and-shoot grip.

Whenever I tried to take photos I found myself fighting against its lack of autofocus β€” or even manual focus β€” and the less-than-ideal zoom quality. The camera has a fixed focus with a minimum focus distance around 60cm β€” which counts out close-up photography β€” and an optimal focal distance of about 1.5m. This also means it isn’t focused to infinity, so landscapes will appear a little soft in your shots, especially since the larger sensor has a shallower depth of field than previous GoPros.

In addition, as soon as you zoom in you’ll find the image quality drops a fair amount, although this is to be expected from the digital zoom this camera uses.

The overall quality isn’t terrible, though, and the point-and-shoot grip does offer some useful versatility for video recording beyond the more traditional action camera use-cases.

With its rugged build and larger display you couldn’t realistically want more from the design of the Mission 1 Pro. My only gripe would be that longtime GoPro fans may be frustrated that they can’t, for now at least, bring all of their lens attachments over to this new camera.

You want a professional-quality action camera
With 8K recording and a full suite of settings that you can adjust, the Mission 1 Pro delivers as professional-grade camera more so than its predecessors.

You don’t want to think too much
Like its predecessors, the Mission 1 Pro boasts a selection of preset recording modes that you can fine-tune to suit your video needs. If you want good shots without putting in a lot of thought and effort, the Mission 1 Pro will still help you capture great shots.

You want a small camera that’ll last
With a hardy exterior that can survive high heat, freezing cold, and excursions deep below the water, and roughly two-hour battery life when shooting 4K/30p, the GoPro Mission 1 Pro will be ready when you need it.

Don’t buy it if…

You want to capture high-quality stills
As an action camera the Mission 1 Pro is great, but as a stills camera I found it wanting, even if there is a dedicated point-and-shoot grip accessory.

You’re on a budget
The GoPro Mission 1 Pro is a lot pricier than other action cameras out there, and if you’re a more casual and budget-conscious user the upgrades might not be worth the outlay.View Deal

The Mission 1 Pro doesn’t support the lenses GoPro has previously offered with its action cameras like the Hero 13 Black. For lens variety you’ll want to check out the Mission 1 Pro ILS model when that launches later this year.View Deal

Also consider

GoPro Hero 13 Black
A more budget-friendly option, and, even years after launch, still a solid action camera performer, the GoPro Hero 13 Black doesn’t boast the 8K quality of the Mission 1. However if you’re after something smaller and lighter for more casual use it’s an excellent alternative.

DJI Osmo Action 6
If you’re already part of the DJI ecosystem, want tools like wireless Hi-Res audio recording when using a DJI Mic 3, or are just after some frankly excellent battery life, decent waterproofing, and a generous 47GB of built-in storage, this DJI camera could be for you. Just note that its video is capped at 4K resolution.

How I tested the GoPro Mission 1 Pro

I spent just over a month with the Mission 1 Pro, taking it out on excursions to snap photos and videos to test its capabilities not just as an action camera, but as a point-and-shoot video capture tool β€” with that latter case aided by the point-and-shoot grip.

If you’re planning to use the GoPro Mission 1 Pro as your vacation camera β€” aided by its durable design and waterproofness β€” the grip is super helpful at helping to keep you hands out of frame, and as a pure action camera the GoPro fits the same mounts and accessories as previous models like the Hero 13 Black (save for the lens attachments).

Inspired by shows like Hunted and Jet Lag The Game, a lot of my testing focused on running and vlogging with the action camera to capture my fitness progress and to record personal cuts of games of hide-and-seek across London β€” passing the camera between my friends so they could record their stints too. Your iPhone is about to get more software updates β€” and AI is the reason why

It seems that the number of ways AI is changing the world is increasing. The requirement for more RAM to run new AI features in Apple products is already being blamed for the recent price increase in Apple products, as well as for the current high price of RAM itself.

Now, according to a recent Reuters report, AI is also to blame for the number of iOS and macOS updates we'll need to install. The bad news is that it's going up, all because of the threat posed by the latest AI models and their potential to aid cyberattacks.

Instead of waiting for the next scheduled operating system update for the latest round of security fixes to arrive, Apple is now delivering individual security updates ahead of the next iOS and macOS 26.6 update.

iOS 26.5.2 is here now

If you look in Settings > General > Software Update on your iPhone, you'll see that iOS 26.5.2 is waiting for you now, unless your iPhone already installed it overnight.

The description for the update reads, rather vaguely: "This update provides security fixes for your iPhone," but it's the dangers posed by AI that are driving this update, so make sure you install it promptly.

Malicious hacking tools

The Reuters article states that the urgency of the update is due to the risk that AI now poses to Apple devices.

"The company told Reuters on Monday it was adapting to the reality that, given the ability of artificial intelligence to speed the development of malicious hacking tools, it needed to reduce the time between when updates were first made public and when they were put into customers' hands."

It looks increasingly likely that this will become the new normal for security updates, and companies like Apple won't be able to rely on bundling the latest security fixes into the next scheduled operating system update. Stand-alone security patches delivered whenever they're needed are something we're all going to have to get used to.

While it might be annoying to keep updating our tech gadgets more often, it's a small price to pay for better security in the AI era. We'll just have to get used to software updates being less about new features and more about staying ahead of increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks.

A classic piece of tech is becoming redundant: BBC waves bye-bye to its Long Wave broadcasts

If you still rock a retro, decades-old radio (and live in the UK), you're probably going to have to pop down to your local electronics store, because it's well on its way to becoming defunct.

BBC 4, the last radio station in the UK to use Long Wave (LW) radio, has now been taken off the airwaves. And by that I mean, it's still going digitally and on FM analog radio, but it's the final station to be taken off BBC's Long Wave service β€” and thus, the power there has been switched off.

This follows a several-decades-long trend, which started in 1995 when the Beeb launched its first-ever DAB broadcast. Over time, digital-only stations and the slow shutdown of aging long-wave tech has made digital one of the preferred ways to listen.

Although several medium-wave and FM radio broadcasts persist, most people listen to their stations via digital audio in 2026, with spoken word and songs converted into binary rather than the warmer, imperfect oscillations of wave-based radio. And I've got to tell you: that's the way it'll continue.

Digital is the future

This format shutdown will reduce the complexity of the BBC's stretched multi-signal operation. In theory, it will increase accessibility β€” you can listen to digital signals wherever you are in the world, without needing to be within signal range β€” but some listeners with limited internet access or technological ability may be cut off.

For better or worse, this is the way it's going. The UK government is consulting on plans for TV to follow suit, with terrestrial TV proposed to be removed by 2034 or, possibly, 2044.

The proposals are facing the same criticism of reducing access to programming, though an eight-year lead-up gives people plenty of time to upgrade. That's especially true given that all of the best TVs these days are, let's face it, smart ones.

According to the BBC, roughly a third of a million viewers only have access to Freeview currently, and the corporation threatened that channels may be shut down if it's forced to support terrestrial for much longer. It'll depend on the consultation process.

It's too late for long wave radio though which, in the UK, now joins the dinosaurs and passenger pigeon in the category of 'things which are extinct'.

At least we know its death wasn't for nothing: it'll keep the BBC ticking along for a little while longer.

I've been testing macOS 27 in beta β€” here's are 3 reasons why it's a bigger upgrade than you might think

When Apple unveiled its upcoming software updates at WWDC 2026 on June 8, we didn't really get much on macOS 27 β€” aside from an animated skit about how the Golden Gate name was chosen. But having given the operating system a trial run, I can report that there is in fact a lot to look forward to.

It's worth emphasizing that installing the developer beta is risky: it's no exaggeration to say it can potentially brick your Mac, or at least some of its apps. Unless you're sure about this, you should wait for the public beta in July or the full release of the software sometime in the fall (for the northern hemisphere).

Just because I haven't come across any problems in my testing doesn't mean it'll be the same for you, but I can tell you that I'm impressed by what I've experienced so far. This is still very much a work in progress from Apple of course, so don't treat this as a review β€” features may come and go before it's pushed out to everyone.

As for compatibility, macOS 27 Golden Gate leaves Intel Macs behind. You'll only be able to install and run this if you're on an Apple Silicon machine. Here are my three favorite things about it so far.

1. It's smooth and fast

Apple has promised performance upgrades with macOS 27 β€” though it's been a little vague on the details β€” and while I haven't run any benchmarks, I'd say my MacBook has felt noticeably faster and snappier. Perhaps Apple is taking advantage of not having to take Intel chips into consideration any more.

Other users have noticed the speed increases too, and it seems that high performance tasks are particularly benefitting from this. Even though I don't do much beyond writing, web browsing, and photo editing, I've seen less in the way of lag and sluggishness than I did before, which bodes well.

These performance gains should hopefully translate into battery life improvements as well, though I haven't noticed any real change in terms of time between charges. Bear in mind that there are still months of development to go on macOS 27 Golden Gate, so it's likely to get better over time (this is still only the developer beta, after all).

2. Siri AI is a genuine upgrade

I have to mention Siri AI, which is now up and running on my MacBook. With a little bit of help from Google and Gemini, it feels like Siri is now genuinely useful on the desktop: answers are accurate and informed, relevant, and personalized to you.

One of the most helpful upgrades is the way that Visual Intelligence now works on macOS 27. You can highlight anything on screen (Shift+Cmd+Space is the shortcut you want), and then ask Siri something about it β€” and the assistant then uses clues about what's on screen and image recognition to serve up an answer.

It's the sort of feature that should've been in Apple Intelligence from the beginning, but at least it's here now. In addition, the dedicated Siri app and the integration with Spotlight works really well too, making the AI more accessible and more versatile.

3. The interface tweaks

There are numerous interface tweaks here that aren't major on their own, but which all add up to make a significant difference. Even something as simple as having an overflow button for menu bar icons is really effective β€” it means if you've got a lot of them, they won't start disappearing behind the notch.

The Liquid Glass slider has been given a lot of attention, and it works as advertised. You can find it in the Appearance section of System Settings, and I've moved it all the way to the right β€” it's as little transparency as possible for me, please. I'm actually hoping Apple gives us more control over this in the final release.

As we've written about before, the icons that were plastered all over app menus are gone as well, leaving behind an interface that suddenly seems more elegant and clean. This isn't a user interface revamp by any means, but it feels as though Apple's engineers have thought long and hard about what changes to make.
