Kimwolf botnet rebuilt to survive takedowns, researchers say

The developers of a notorious botnet that’s powered mostly by hijacked Android TV boxes and other internet-connected devices have released a new version built to blend attack traffic in with ordinary web browsing and to keep its command channels from being seized by law enforcement, researchers at Palo Alto Networks said in a report published Tuesday.

The company’s Unit 42 threat intelligence group, which tracks the botnet as Kimwolf or Aisuru, said the newest version has been active since February, a month before authorities seized infrastructure powering previous versions of the botnet. 

The biggest change, according to the report, is a new flood method built on HTTP/2, the protocol that carries most web traffic today. A flood is the crude heart of a DDoS attack: thousands of infected devices send a target far more requests than it can answer. Rather than fire raw packets, this latest Kimwolf version operates with full browser fingerprints, copying the header order and behavior of the Chrome web browser. That matters because the usual defense against a flood is for tools to spot the fake traffic and drop or block it before it reaches the server. Traffic that looks like Chrome does not get dropped, so a site under attack must either serve every request and fall over, or start turning away the customers it cannot tell apart from the bots.

The second change, according to researchers, looks like it was done to withstand further takedowns. Every bot has to ask a command server for orders, which is also what authorities aim to disrupt in botnet takedowns. Normally, the command server address sits inside the malware as a web domain name, so investigators who take that name from its registrar are able to disrupt an entire botnet. 

This Kimwolf version moves its command beyond registrar controls. The malware now looks up its command address in the Ethereum Name Service, a directory that lives on the Ethereum blockchain. A web address using this service can display the way a normal domain does, but the domain’s record sits in a ledger copied across thousands of computers worldwide. The malware carries five public Ethereum services and shuffles the order before each attempt, making it harder for defensive tools to block. Additionally, there is no company to serve with a law enforcement order and no domain record to seize.

Additionally, if all five addresses fail, the botnet falls back to a fixed Tor hidden service address written into the code. Tor resolves that address through its own network rather than the ordinary domain system, and it hides where the server actually sits, which leaves investigators without a host to contact.

Researchers’ infrastructure analysis pointed to the machines powering the command structure to be located in Russia. Four of these servers shared a SSH host key, with further analysis finding that the servers sit in one network registered in Saint Petersburg.

It’s unclear if this version was made by people behind previous iterations of the botnet, or a new person or threat group looking to capitalize on the botnet’s notoriety among malicious actors. 

Unit 42 did not respond to CyberScoop’s request for comment. 

Kimwolf, which splintered off from the record-setting Aisuru DDoS botnet last year, gained the widespread attention of security researchers when it temporarily claimed the top spot in Cloudflare’s global domain rankings in late October 2025. Previous versions of the botnet were disrupted by an international law enforcement operation in March that ended with Kimwolf’s infrastructure being seized.

A Canadian man alleged to run the botnet was arrested in May and extradited to the United States.

Delta investigates in-flight Wi-Fi spoofing on post-DEF CON flight from Las Vegas

Delta Airlines said Tuesday it’s investigating an incident on a Monday flight where a passenger reportedly used an unidentified device to spoof the airline’s in-flight Wi-Fi network, leading to severe delays and authorities to board the plane once it arrived at its destination.

Various posts on several social media networks went viral early Tuesday detailing the incident, claiming that passengers on Delta flight 591 from Las Vegas to Atlanta used an unidentified device to create a rogue Wi-Fi network that could be used to steal people’s sensitive data or personal information.

Messages from the plane’s Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) show that the crew informed personnel on the ground that a passenger set up a network called “Delta WiFi Fast” and was “trying to scam the other passengers.”

Morgan Durrant, a Delta spokesperson, told CyberScoop that the cabin crew deactivated the aircraft’s WiFi functionality for approximately 30 minutes, the flight’s safety was never in question and no aircraft operating systems were affected.

“We are fully investigating to gather a complete set of facts, which will take time,” Durrant told CyberScoop. “We will partner with federal law enforcement and aviation regulators to ensure the incident is thoroughly investigated. We thank our crew for their professionalism and our customers for their understanding.”

The Atlanta office of the FBI, along with the Federal Aviation Administration, said it was aware of the incident, but did not provide further comment. The Transportation Security Administration referred CyberScoop to the FBI. Homeland Security Investigations did not respond to a request for comment.

The incident bears the hallmarks of an “evil twin attack,” where an attacker deploys a rogue Wi-Fi access point that masquerades as a legitimate, trusted network by cloning its name and network settings. Often paired with deauthentication attacks that forcefully disconnect devices from the real network, the fraudulent hotspot tricks nearby laptops and smartphones into automatically connecting to it instead. Once a device connects to the rogue point, an attacker can monitor unencrypted internet traffic, execute man-in-the-middle attacks, or display spoofed login portals designed to harvest sensitive user credentials and personal data.  

The timing of the incident comes as the annual DEF CON cybersecurity conference concluded in Las Vegas on Sunday. The flight, originally scheduled for Sunday, did not leave Las Vegas until 8:30 a.m. Monday.

Monika Hathaway, head of press for DEF CON, told CyberScoop that Delta nor any federal authorities have reached out about the incident. However, she said this year’s conference had trouble with similar attacks.

“Our conference this year also suffered from multiple similar ‘deauthorization’ Wi-Fi attacks and it impacted some of our operations,” Hathaway told CyberScoop. “If we had caught them doing this at DEF CON we would have removed and banned them from the conference.”

NATO and an AI startup can now name and track software vulnerabilities

NATO’s cyber defense arm and a startup that uses artificial intelligence to find software flaws can now issue the ID numbers the industry uses to track those flaws, the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity announced last week

The NATO Cyber Security Centre, part of the NATO Communications and Information Agency, and AISLE, a cybersecurity company with offices in San Francisco and Prague, joined as CVE numbering authorities under the ENISA Root. The CVE program assigns a unique record to each publicly disclosed security flaw so that governments, vendors and researchers have a common marker when referring to particular vulnerabilities. 

Twenty numbering authorities now sit under the ENISA Root, with 12 brought in by ENISA itself and eight moving over from the MITRE Root, run by the U.S. nonprofit that has handled the program’s daily work for more than 20 years.

Hans de Vries, ENISA’s chief cybersecurity and operations officer, linked the growth to changes in how people find flaws. 

“Recent developments in the global cybersecurity landscape, coupled with the emergence of Frontier AI models and their impact on vulnerability discovery and exploitation, have underscored the need to build strong vulnerability management infrastructure and capabilities,” he said in a statement. He said ENISA’s role helps build a “more globally representative, resilient, and scalable vulnerability identification ecosystem.”

The two new members show how bespoke each member is within its authority. The NATO Cyber Security Centre can now assign CVE IDs to eligible flaws across the NATO enterprise. The agency said that will make tracking more consistent and let the alliance share information with trusted partners sooner. The center guards NATO’s networks, watches for threats and coordinates the response when incidents hit.

Meanwhile, AISLE’s authorization is narrower. The company said in a July press release that the designation covers vulnerabilities discovered in its own products, allowing it to publish identifiers without waiting for a third-party authority to process a request. 

Jaya Baloo, the company’s co-founder, described the step as “foundational” and said coordinated disclosure “starts with holding your own products to the same standard you expect of everyone else.” Separately from the designation, the company said its researchers have disclosed hundreds of vulnerabilities in widely used open-source software, including OpenSSL, Linux, Apache and OpenEMR, each coordinated through the relevant authority for that project.

The changes come as the CVE process continues to involve amid program upheaval and the torrent of vulnerabilities discovered by AI systems. 

The CVE program, run by CISA, narrowly escaped a sudden demise when a last-minute, 11-month contract extension averted a shutdown in April 2025. Since then, several competing databases from European nonprofits and other private entities have been stood up in order to better coordinate how vulnerabilities are tracked, disclosed, and ultimately patched.

Earlier this year, The Computer Incident Response Center Luxembourg (CIRCL) launched the Global CVE Allocation System, or GCVE, as an alternative to the CVE program.

U.S., South Korean government agencies caution to be on lookout for Gunra ransomware gang

U.S. and South Korean cyber agencies warned Monday about a ransomware-as-a-service outfit, Gunra, that reportedly recruits ethical hackers and penetration testers and benefits from North Korean government-linked hackers’ tools to target government and critical infrastructure organizations.

Gunra has gone after sectors such as academia, financial services and insurance, government services and facilities, healthcare, manufacturing and construction, media, retail, transportation and utilities. Its global scope is far-ranging, according to Monday’s alert: Africa, the Americas, the Asia-Pacific, Europe and the Middle East.

“Gunra is another variant in the ongoing trend of ransomware attacks causing disruption and harm to U.S. and international organizations,” said Chris Butera, acting assistant director for cybersecurity at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, which produced the advisory with the Department of Defense’s Cyber Crime Center, FBI, National Security Agency, Secret Service and Republic of Korea’s National Police Agency.

The alert is part of the #StopRansomware series, a joint FBI-CISA project aimed at network defenders.

The FBI first took notice of Gunra in April of last year. The double-extortion group established a data leak site on Tor to list victims and publish purloined data. By January of this year, Gunra had launched a formal ransomware-as-a-service affiliate and was growing in its ambition, Monday’s alert states.

“The FBI observed the group adopting new branding aliases (notably operating under the name Golden Community) to support this expansion,” it reads. “Gunra has further commercialized its platform by actively recruiting penetration testers and ethical hackers to serve as initial access brokers, offering a share of the ransom profits in exchange for enterprise network access.”

Gunra seeks initial access with known vulnerabilities in internet-facing devices like firewalls or virtual private networks, and is based on or influenced by the Conti ransomware code leaked in 2022, according to the agencies.

Research published in July by a South Korean cybersecurity firm took note of Gunra overlap with Lazarus Group, although it doesn’t explicitly mention the latter group’s name.

“These commonalities suggest that although the state-sponsored threat group and the Gunra ransomware group appear to be separate threat actors with different ultimate objectives, they may have shared certain techniques, tools, and infrastructure or collaborated to a limited extent during the attacks,” AhnLab wrote in its report.

That kind of North Korean government-ransomware gang collaboration dates back to at least 2024. Nor is Gunra alone among ransomware-as-a-service outfits recruiting penetration testers.

UK man tied to The Com sentenced for abusing 117 victims

A 20-year-old man in the United Kingdom was sentenced to two years in prison Monday after admitting to running an online abuse campaign that affected 117 victims across multiple countries during his time in the loosely organized online criminal network known as The Com.

Justin Swaddle, who was a minor when committed the crimes, pleaded guilty last month to a series of child sexual abuse offenses and blackmail. He was sentenced Monday at the same court and will be required to register as a sex offender.

The National Crime Agency, the U.K.’s lead law enforcement agency, had been investigating Swaddle since January 2024 after local police arrested him in October 2023 on charges of possessing, making and distributing indecent images. Investigators eventually found a broad online presence on Snapchat, Telegram and Discord, where he operated under usernames including “Epstein,” “Rugen” and “Moscow.”

A search of his phone and computer also turned up hundreds of sexually explicit conversations with young females, according to the NCA. Investigators determined Swaddle was part of The Com, a sprawling cybercriminal network of minors and young adults who engage in violence, extortion, sextortion and various forms of cybercrime. 

The NCA identified 117 female victims worldwide between the ages of 13 and 17, eight of them in the United Kingdom. One victim, 17, told investigators she met Swaddle on Discord in November 2022 before their conversations moved to Snapchat. She said Swaddle obtained her name, address and school details, then used that information to pressure her into various acts, threatening to expose her personal information unless she provided further images and videos.

“Justin Swaddle targeted young and vulnerable victims all over the world to abuse and scare them into carrying out shocking self-harm and sexual activity, purely to gain popularity with his peers online,” Danielle Pownall, an operations manager from the NCA, said in a release. “While the number of people involved in Com groups are relatively small, the impact it has on victims is high and long-lasting, as Swaddle’s offending shows.”

Law enforcement in both the U.K. and United States has been extremely active over the past few months in bringing Com-affiliated members to justice. Last week, a Canadian man who was linked with the group pleaded guilty for the widespread compromise of more than 165 Snowflake customer environments. Last month, a pair of young men tied to the Com were sentenced in the U.K. to 66 months in jail for committing a cyberattack on the Transport for London in 2024.

Coast Guard says it is monitoring cyberattack that disrupted North Carolina’s ports

The U.S. Coast Guard said it is monitoring the aftermath of a cyberattack that disrupted gate operations at all three of North Carolina’s port facilities this week, though it offered few details as the investigation into the breach continues.

A Coast Guard spokesperson told CyberScoop that the branch’s IT unit was coordinating with partner agencies while conducting the investigation. A spokesperson for CISA did not respond to CyberScoop’s inquiry by press time. 

The Coast Guard is one of several state and federal partners the North Carolina State Ports Authority brought in after discovering the attack on its systems earlier this week. The breach affected the Port of Wilmington, the Port of Morehead City and the Charlotte Inland Port, forcing the agency to delay gate openings and shift to manual processing while it worked to contain the intrusion.

A spokesperson for the ports authority told local media its IT team activated the agency’s cybersecurity contingency plan upon discovering the attack, as well as reaching out to state authorities for further support. 

As of Friday morning, a notice on the ports website said a normal operating schedule was in effect while the IT teams continued their investigation. It has not disclosed the nature of the attack, which systems were affected, or whether vessel operations, cargo-handling equipment or rail services were disrupted.

North Carolina’s ports serve as a trade hub along the southeastern U.S., with Wilmington in particular functioning as a gateway for agricultural exports, retail goods and raw materials.

The North Carolina Ports Authority said it would continue posting updates on its website and pointed users toward its email alert service for further information. It did not provide an estimate of how much truck or cargo traffic has been affected by the disruption.

The incident adds to a recent string of cyberattacks against water and wastewater systems in the U.S., which also fall under the umbrella of “critical infrastructure.” While there has been no official attribution, experts have expressed confidence that Iranian actors are responsible for the attacks on water systems.

As of Friday morning, there has been no public information tying the port cyberattack to a specific actor.

Capitol Hill wants to know if executive branch, foreign allies coordinated enough to combat scams

Senators from both parties Thursday probed Trump administration officials about whether federal agencies and foreign governments are coordinated enough in the battle against scammers, something witnesses told the Foreign Relations Committee they were working to remedy.

At least 13 federal agencies have authorities to counter scams, raising questions about whether someone needs to be in charge of all those efforts. And while there was some bipartisan sentiment at Thursday’s hearing that the Trump administration has taken good actions to battle scammers, both lawmakers and administration officials said that scam operations have demonstrated that cracking down on them in one place often just leads to them going elsewhere.

Sen. Pete Ricketts, R-Neb., compared the situation to an international initiative that gained prominence in the 1990s to counter drug trafficking, Joint Interagency Task Force South.

“Given that today’s scam centers are similarly transnational, combining cybercrime, human trafficking, money laundering and cryptocurrency, has the threat reached the point that we should establish a comparable multinational coordination mechanism?” he asked.

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., focused on federal coordination: She paraphrased a former federal official who said, “there is nobody that is heading that effort up across agencies. We need to treat this like combat, and so we need somebody in charge.”

Shaheen, the top Democrat on the panel, is a co-sponsor of the bipartisan Scam Compound Accountability and Mobilization (SCAM) Act, which seeks to unify federal efforts on the subject.

A State Department official told Shaeen scammers were a national security priority for President Donald Trump, and that his executive order on the topic sought to tackle coordination.

“I do understand that this is a whole-of-government approach, and many agencies are focused on this,” said David Bedard, deputy assistant secretary at State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs “The Action plan that was directed by the president is currently in the interagency review process to deconflict some of the concerns that you have raised. We certainly think the task force that will be implanted through the executive order will solve the problems you might be referencing.”

There’s also an international plan under the task force, he said. Currently, the administration shares intelligence on scammers with foreign allies, and Interpol has “productive” channels to work through there and is setting up its own task force, Bedard said, but there are concerns about other countries taking similar, duplicative action.

There have been signs of progress on the international front, Bedard and another State Department witness told the panel.

Michael DeSombre, assistant secretary at the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, said Trump has raised the subject with Chinese President Xi Jinping, and that China has used its influence in Asia as its own citizens have become scam victims. Still, there’s been more progress in countries where the United States has stronger relations, such as Cambodia, than in those where ties aren’t as close, like Burma and Laos.

In Cambodia, one key has been pursuing scam center bosses first and foremost, Bedard said.

Despite federal warnings, thousands of U.S. industrial controllers used in water systems remain exposed online

A new scan of internet-connected industrial equipment found over 4,000 Rockwell Automation and Allen-Bradley controllers exposed online, including 22 in cities impacted by cyberattacks on U.S. water systems.

The findings, published Wednesday by Forescout’s Vedere Labs, show that direct internet access to equipment used in water and wastewater operations remains common despite years of warnings from manufacturers and federal agencies.

The exposed devices use EtherNet/IP, an industrial protocol that allows for communication between control equipment, engineering workstations and other systems. When the port is open to the public internet, outside users may be able to identify devices and, depending on their setup, change settings or write new configurations.

The scan, run through the Shodan search engine Monday, found that 2,844 of the exposed controllers (65%) were in the United States.

The FBI and Environmental Protection Agency issued a joint advisory last week confirming attacks at water and wastewater utilities in at least 12 states since July 27. Officials have since named Michigan, South Dakota and Georgia among the affected states. Nine systems were hit in Michigan, and one wastewater lift station was hit in South Dakota.

Several reports have linked the attacks to Iranian actors, but Sai Molige, senior manager of threat hunting at Forescout, says the company has not attributed this activity to any actor or group.  

“The evidence supports opportunistic, at-scale exploitation of a known class of vulnerabilities affecting internet-exposed devices,” Molige told CyberScoop. “The scale and speed of the activity are more consistent with mass scanning and enumeration than with zero-day exploitation, a months-long intrusion campaign, or custom malware.”

The advisory said attackers targeted programmable logic controllers (PLCs) made by Rockwell Automation under its Allen-Bradley brand, specifically the MicroLogix 1100 and 1400 models. In at least one case, attackers reached controllers remotely and changed their IP addresses and passwords, cutting off the utility’s own view and control of the equipment. The advisory said the attacks caused pressure loss and flooding.

Forescout’s research states that the most common exposed device family was the MicroLogix 1400, which made up half of the devices found. Other versions, such as AllenBradley’s CompactLogix 1769 controllers, made up 22%. MicroLogix 1100 and ControlLogix 5590 devices each accounted for about 8%.

Forescout cross-referenced those machines against the recently targeted cities and municipalities and found 22 devices still exposed to the internet. However, the company did not say those systems had been attacked or that they belonged to the affected utilities.

The research also found that 19 of the 22 hosts in affected cities appeared, based on firmware versions, to be open to CVE-2017-16740, a remote code execution flaw disclosed in 2017 that impacts MicroLogix 1400 devices. An attacker would need Modbus TCP enabled to use that flaw, and the researchers could not confirm whether the affected systems had it enabled.

Rockwell Automation and other industrial equipment makers have warned customers not to place controllers directly on the public internet as far back as 2018.

Beyond the controllers, the researchers also looked at the digital records tied to these utilities. They found expired certificates, remote-access web addresses left unrenewed for months or years, and servers that appear abandoned — in one case, a server that has shown nothing but a default Microsoft webpage since April 2019. 

“These stale services can increase the attack surface; however, we have not yet confirmed how the observed attacks occurred,” Molige told CyberScoop.

Open-source software’s archenemy TeamPCP goes back further than anyone thought

TeamPCP, the threat actor behind an unrelenting flurry of attacks on open-source software this year, has been active much longer than previously thought, according to research Oligo Security shared exclusively with CyberScoop. 

The threat actor, which gained notoriety and has captivated threat hunters as it compromised and injected malicious code into more than 1,000 software packages in less than four months earlier this year, was also responsible for attacks dating back to 2020, Oligo Security found. 

The security vendor’s research team found multiple attacks that bear the markings of TeamPCP, including a late 2025 campaign involving the exploitation of a ShadowRay vulnerability that resulted in the first self-propogating botnet running on hijacked AI infrastructure.

Evidence uncovered during that investigation into the ShadowRay 2.0 campaign was linked to more historical attacks originating from the same IPs, domains and other infrastructure TeamPCP used in attacks that captured widespread attention earlier this year. 

“The scariest thing in this campaign is the speed at which the payloads evolved and changed and adapted to the environment they run in. We saw changes in the speed that we’re not used to seeing in these kinds of attacks. They’re usually slow, careful,” said Uri Katz, director of research at Oligo Security. “This was clearly with the help of AI — the payloads changed rapidly to adjust and change to the environment that they were trying to attack.”

One of the domains that Oligo Security identified in July 2025 was in the profile of TeamPCP’s official GitHub account, said Avi Lumelsky, AI security researcher at Oligo Security. “It’s public, they’re not even trying to hide their identity,” he said. 

From there, Oligo linked TeamPCP to activity tracked under multiple names, including TA-NATALSTATUS and IronErn, spanning from 2020 to late 2025. Much of that activity was traced to the same IPs, domain names, a file server and command-and-control server, researchers said. 

TeamPCP emerged publicly as a brand in late 2025. Soon after, “TeamPCP started to go really broad and do campaigns, which are much more noisy,” said Gal Elbaz, co-founder and CTO at Oligo Security. 

Widespread adoption of AI and TeamPCP’s use of the technology supported this growth as the threat actor built a brand, got more active on social media and boasted publicly about its activities and claimed victims.

“The ability to control the infrastructure and orchestrate the attack with AI was also super new, and I’m sure it helps them,” Elbaz said. 

“All of the companies in the world are in this race to adopt AI because they are afraid their business will die, and they understand, of course, the opportunity. But it’s also what gives the attacker this power to go into it,” he added. “If you don’t really have visibility in what’s going on there or how it behaves, that’s exactly what attackers are after.”

TeamPCP’s more recent attacks have capitalized on new security gaps created by developers’ increasing reliance on AI and the automated systems companies use to deploy code. The threat actor is also consistently wrecking the open-source frameworks and software packages these systems rely on. 

“Most AI infrastructure is open source by design because nobody has the manpower and money to develop everything from scratch,” Lumelsky said. 

“We love open source. We use many of these products ourselves, but it’s all about reading the documentation, and I think many of these tools place the responsibility of using it right and security on the user, and developers are not used to these new kinds of animals,” he added. “That’s why the trust can be exploited at scale.”

As it uncovered a long operational history spanning multiple campaigns, Oligo Security has gained more confidence in understanding how TeamPCP operates. It also means TeamPCP was likely involved in other attacks that haven’t been attributed to it yet or attacks that haven’t been detected. 

“There’s a lot more out there that we haven’t caught or been able to prove up until now,” Elbaz said.

Massive supply-chain attack compromises 440 packages under four hours

In less than four hours early Tuesday, an attacker compromised a GitHub maintainer account and unleashed a self-replicating piece of malware which injected malicious code into more than 440 distinct npm packages, according to multiple security firms. 

The worm, built on the open-source Mini Shai-Hulud repository that TeamPCP published in May, was initially let loose in keyv, a data management interface software package with more than 600 million monthly downloads. The attacker spent the next 30 minutes compromising additional packages controlled by the same maintainer, including cacheable, flat-cache, file-entry-cache.

The attack spread to other maintainers, eventually compromising more than 860 packages with a “combined total of over 2 billion monthly installs,” Ilyas Makari, malware researcher at Aikido Security, wrote in a blog post

Wiz researchers told CyberScoop it hasn’t observed any new malicious packages since the initial wave moved through a massive footpoint of cloud and code environments in those first four hours. 

“This is the most critical initial compromise, with over 155 million weekly downloads on the root packages,” Wiz Research said in an email. 

Some of the compromised packages, including keyv, flat-cache and file-entry-cache, are present in more than 46% of all cloud environments, according to Wiz. “By comparison, back in the Shai-Hulud 2.0 campaign the most prevalent packages were only in about 28% of environments,” the company said. 

“Time will tell whether the eventual cost and impact outpaces past attacks, or whether adoption of hardening mechanisms such as package aging, and the usage of the relatively less aggressive Mini Shai-Hulud code as basis, will defray the final toll here,” Wiz Research added. 

Researchers from multiple firms sprung into action to monitor the widening attack spree and published indicators of compromise to help potential victims hunt for malicious activity in their systems. 

The Mini Shai-Hulud variant used in these attacks scoops up a trove of sensitive data, including npm, GitHub, AWS and continuous integration credentials. It also steals AI-related configuration files and cryptocurrency wallets, researchers said. 

Microsoft, Aikido, Socket and Wiz all said the same payload and pattern was observed across all affected packages, indicating a single attacker or threat cluster was behind the supply-chain attack and using multiple stolen tokens. 

The malware showcased a few pieces of new functionality, but retained the same core mechanisms that are hallmarks of Mini Shai-Hulud. 

“The evolution is consistent with what we’ve seen from them in past waves, however we don’t yet have the hard links” to confidently attribute the attacks to TeamPCP, Wiz Research said.

The notorious threat actor, which Google previously told CyberScoop it attributes to one core operator that was located in South Africa during at least some of the attacks, compromised and injected malicious code into more than 1,000 software packages in less than four months earlier this year.

Prolific ransomware group behind SonicWall zero-day attacks

Researchers said INC ransomware, one of the most active ransomware groups globally, has been the main attacker exploiting a pair of SonicWall zero-days soon after they were disclosed last month.

The prolific ransomware-as-a-service operation wasn’t the first group to exploit the flaws, which were actively exploited for three weeks before the vendor disclosed and patched the defects July 14, but it has been the most assertive and concerning group to target and chain both vulnerabilities together for full access.

“Since public disclosure, INC ransomware has emerged as the most commonly named threat actor actively weaponizing this vulnerability chain,” Brett Deroche, director of incident response at Rapid7, told CyberScoop. “While Inc is the name driving the post-disclosure wave, we can’t attribute the full body of exploitation to INC specifically.”

SonicWall did not respond to a request for comment.

The SonicWall vulnerabilities — CVE-2026-15409 and CVE-2026-15410 — are the latest in a series of security issues confronting the vendor’s customers, including actively exploited zero-days, previously disclosed defects, and an attack last year that allowed a state-sponsored threat group to steal the firewall configurations of every SonicWall customer

Just last week, Huntress researchers spotted an attack spree that compromised 30 SonicWall customers in less than two days. 

Ransomware groups have taken a special interest in SonicWall. Ten of the 17 SonicWall defects added to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s known exploited vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog since late 2021 are known to be used in ransomware campaigns.

INC ransomware, which has claimed nearly 900 victims across 71 countries since it was first discovered three years ago, is just the latest financially-motivated group to target SonicWall customers. 

Researchers haven’t determined how many organizations have been impacted by the latest SonicWall zero-days, including attacks linked to INC ransomware. 

“Attribution here isn’t a single clean answer. The earliest exploitation we observed, beginning June 22, traced back to common hosted infrastructure, though those attacks were largely unsuccessful,” Deroche said. 

“INC’s confirmed activity that we’ve observed came after public disclosure, using different infrastructure and moving from initial access to ransomware deployment in short order. That’s a meaningfully different operational tempo and skill level than what we saw pre-disclosure,” he added. 

Deroche said Rapid7 has successfully prevented data theft and encryption in the majority of recent cases, yet noted ransomware was deployed in at least one case the security vendor observed.

Yet, there could be other attacks outside the purview of Rapid7’s telemetry. INC ransomware has listed multiple new alleged victims on its data leak site, including organizations and government agencies in Australia, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Colombia and Switzerland, Resecurity said in a blog post Saturday.

The company said it has aided several victims with incident response, and learned multiple victims received emails and phone calls from alleged hackers who pressured them to engage in negotiations.

CrowdStrike: AI is now both the weapon and the target in cyberattacks

While AI is supposed to help defenders, it’s now creating more than twice as much noise as human-triggered incidents CrowdStrike detects as potentially malicious. The company’s threat hunting team and systems triaged an average of 14 million detection leads daily, resulting in about 36,000 customer alerts during the one-year period ending in June.

“AI agent-driven behaviors have surged past human triggers,” said Adam Meyers, senior vice president of counter adversary operations at CrowdStrike. “AI has driven the detections significantly above what humans are causing, and this gives you a sense of how frequently AI is being used, and really just that it’s being used everywhere.”

The threat posed by AI showed up incessantly during the past year, sparking alarming shifts and heightened targeting across software defects, open-source supply chains and AI tools themselves — all of which create greater difficulties for defenders, CrowdStrike said in its annual threat hunting report

“The AI tools that are being implemented by every enterprise across the globe right now are also creating an extended attack surface,” Meyers said during a press briefing. 

“AI is now a tool, a target, and a force multiplier for adversaries,” researchers wrote in the report, adding that AI-enabled malicious activity surged 89% during the past year as attackers used the technology to scale operations, hasten tradecraft and target AI infrastructure.

Attackers are using frontier AI models to uncover vulnerabilities and develop resources, including AI-generated scripts, payloads and commands that increase their effectiveness and efficiency. The technology also allows threat groups to design more creative ways to run automated attacks and boost impact by manipulating, interrupting or sabotaging AI systems and data.

“AI is both the weapon and the target,” Meyers said. 

Most organizations don’t view it as such, and thus far haven’t secured or put proper guardrails around the AI tools they use or address the ways attackers can use AI against them, he added. 

AI’s mark on vulnerabilities is particularly concerning, as reflected by what Meyers described as “one of the scarier stats” in this year’s report: 88% of vulnerabilities were weaponized through AI within 48 hours. 

“This is creating a rich ecosystem of vulnerabilities for attackers to use against various systems,” he said. It also renders the 30-day patch window obsolete, forcing organizations to struggle under a new baseline patch cycle of 24 to 48 hours, according to Meyers.

The AI ecosystem also became the next software supply chain battleground during the past year, as evidenced by TeamPCP’s rampage through open-source software in the first half of this year. 

The threat cluster compromised more than 300 software dependencies in one day, Meyers said. 

AI tools are already in the crosshairs and the attack surface will continue to grow as agentic systems, AI application integrations and dependency managers for AI agents proliferate, the report concluded.

“The same AI tools driving modern businesses are creating under-defended attack surfaces that adversaries are exploiting,” Meyers said. “We have to secure AI. This is absolutely critical.”

Trump blames Minnesota for cyberattacks on water sector, drawing pushback from cyber world

President Donald Trump blamed Minnesota Friday for the cyberattacks its water systems have suffered in recent days, saying the state was “behind it.”

Trump said the state being “incompetent” was the issue, but it wasn’t clear whom he thought actually conducted cyberattacks that U.S. investigators have attributed to Iran — if, perhaps, somehow Minnesota incompetently cyberattacked itself. The White House referred a request for clarification back to Trump’s remarks.

“I think that Minnesota is behind it,” Trump told reporters Friday. “Because they’re grossly incompetent. I don’t think there was an Iranian cyberattack. I think Minnesota ought to get its act together.”

The White House also didn’t clarify whom the president believed was behind similar attacks in other states, when asked for comment. Trump has repeatedly used federal power aggressively in Minnesota, a state led by Gov. Tim Walz, a Democrat who was on the ticket that ran against him in 2024 as the vice presidential nominee. Trump also has downplayed Iranian attacks amid the war he launched against the nation with Israel in February.

A number of cyber experts quickly pushed back on Trump’s comments after he made them.

“Victim blaming in cyber is so 2000 and late,” cybersecurity pioneer Chris Wysopal, Veracode co-founder and chief security evangelist, said on the Bluesky social media platform. Said Jake Williams, a member of the IANS faculty: “His own intelligence services are attributing this to Iran.”

Andy Jabbour — founder and CEO of Gate 15, a cybersecurity firm which provides support to the water sector — told CyberScoop that, “speaking candidly, I’m not even sure what he was actually saying or suggesting Minnesota’s government did or didn’t do.”

“Attribution is tricky business,” he continued, referencing recent alerts from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and others. “But logically, given an ongoing war with Iran, recent statements made by Iran-aligned threat groups, with assessments that the recent activity is aligned with recent CISA warnings, given yesterday’s statements from CISA and the FBI, random unsubstantiated allegations aimed at political opponents seem reckless and are a disservice to the American people.”

Walz struck back at Trump in a Facebook post, noting steps from his Department of Government Efficiency to slash federal funding. CISA has shrunken considerably under Trump, and his administration has pushed states to defend against cyberattacks that feds once countered.

“Trump knows exactly who is responsible for this attack, and knows that other states were hit too,” Walz said. “This is what modern warfare looks like, and it further illustrates there’s no plan to win a war with Iran.”

“DOGE took an axe to CISA and left the U.S. exposed to cyber attacks,” he continued. “Thankfully, our experts in Minnesota were able to identify the vulnerability quickly and work with local communities to stop it.”

A spokesperson for Minnesota IT Services, a state agency that has been responding to the water cyberattacks, declined to address Trump’s remarks.

“We remain focused on supporting affected communities, securing critical infrastructure and coordinating with local partners and federal officials as the investigation continues,” the spokesperson, Emily Zimmer, told CyberScoop. “We will not comment on political statements or speculate about attribution.”

Other cyber professionals declined to comment directly on Trump’s remarks, but offered thoughts on who was behind the attacks and their motives.

Bryson Bort, CEO and founder of Scythe said the evidence supports the attribution with Iran, and that it looks like hackers there found something they could exploit on the internet and seized the chance.

“This was a target of opportunity,” said Bort, co-founder of the ICS Village, a non-profit advancing awareness of industrial control system security; such systems are common in the water sector. “It wasn’t that Minnesota did something as a state to raise Iran’s ire.”

Cynthia Kaiser, a former top FBI cyber official, said that when the bureau conducts attributions, it looks at technical indicators but also who has the capability, who has conducted similar attacks in the past and what the purpose of the attacks is.

“Iran ticks all these kinds of things,” Kaiser, now senior vice president at cybersecurity firm Halcyon, told CyberScoop. “My view is, if it walks like a duck, if it talks like a duck, I strongly suspect it’s a duck. I’d be shocked if we found out it wasn’t Iran.”

Just last week, CISA updated an advisory about how Iranian hackers were targeting programmable logic controllers in the water sector and other sectors, a warning that the water industry’s information sharing and analysis center said it believed.

“WaterISAC is confident in our government partners’ assessment that the confirmed activity is aligned with the joint Cybersecurity Advisory (CSA) AA26-097A ‘Iranian-Affiliated Cyber Actors Exploit Programmable Logic Controllers Across U.S. Critical Infrastructure’ published and recently updated by CISA,” Tom Dobbins, executive director, WaterISAC, told CyberScoop. “We have evidence of earlier attacks from Iran even before this current conflict. Cyber attacks are the most viable way that Iran can directly attack our homeland, and it is logical that they would do so, especially given the challenges of absolute attribution.”

The water sector is often viewed as one of the most vulnerable critical infrastructure sectors, and Dobbins called on Congress to provide funding to provide funding for the ISAC.

Sen. Tina Smith, D-Minn., also took issue with Trump’s comments.

“The President provided an unserious response that is beneath the dignity of the office he holds. Iran’s purported cyberattack on Minnesota’s water infrastructure must be taken as a serious threat to our national security.  Smith said in a statement, adding that she’s been in touch with CISA and the FBI and was grateful to Minnesota’s IT experts. “The entire situation serves as a stark reminder of the danger this war puts us in the longer it drags on.”

Fellow Minnesota Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar had earlier been in touch with Sean Cairncross, the national cyber director and a Minnesota native, about the incident.

Trump has previously displayed a laissez-faire view toward other cyberattacks on the United States, such as when he’s been asked about Chinese and Russian cyberattacks and Trump shrugs them off as something America does, too.

He also has cast doubt before on his government officials’ assessments of who’s responsible for cyberattacks on the United States, such as when he asserted China rather than Russia was behind the landmark SolarWinds breach.

A little-known npm package was North Korea’s warm-up act for the axios hack

Amazon’s security researchers say a hacking group tied to North Korea targeted small, little-noticed software packages more than a year before it struck one of the internet’s most widely used programming tools.

The company’s threat intelligence team said Wednesday at a media roundtable at its Arlington, Va., offices that the same group linked to the recent compromise of the open-source axios software library also planted malicious code in a package called typo-crypto in March 2025, a full year before the axios breach. Researchers found the connection while tracing domain records tied to the axios attack back to earlier activity.

“We believe the March 2025 typo-crypto campaign was a rehearsal,” said CJ Moses, Amazon’s chief information security officer, adding that the target’s small scale let the group test its methods “without putting that on the big stage.”

Amazon said the group also compromised two other packages, debug and chalk, in September 2025. Until now, those three incidents had not been publicly linked to the same actor. Security researchers track the group under several names, including UNC1069, Sapphire Sleet and Stardust Chollima. 

Axios, debug and chalk are code libraries used by software developers around the world to build applications. Axios alone is downloaded more than 100 million times a week. “That number represents real organizations putting real code into production systems every single week,” Moses said.

In the typo-crypto case, the malicious file was named “core.js” and was made to look like a legitimate, unrelated package called core-js. Amazon said the file activated only when it received a specific numeric input, then reached out to a server controlled by the attackers to download a second piece of code. That second stage was written differently depending on whether the infected computer ran Windows, macOS or Linux. The code combined encoded text with a cipher, a method Moses said was meant to slow down analysis, including by AI-based review tools, without relying on heavy encryption.

Amazon said the typo-crypto package had few downloads compared with axios, debug or chalk. Researchers believe that initial target served as practice, letting the group refine its approach before turning to more widely used software. “They did what a lot of people do: crawl, walk, run,” Moses said. 

In each of the four cases, Amazon said, the attackers built a relationship with a maintainer who already had access to a package, then used that access to publish an update containing hidden code. “They didn’t break through a window,” Moses said. “They basically earned the trust of an employee to hand them the keys.”

Cybersecurity firm Wiz separately found that about 1 in 10 cloud computing environments were affected by the debug and chalk incident within a two-hour span, a finding Moses cited to illustrate how fast the impact spread. “Going from there not being a vulnerability, to there being a vulnerability, to there being an exploited vulnerability … used to be days to weeks. Now it’s hours to minutes,” he said.

Rick Anthony, senior engineering manager at Amazon Web Services, said the research further shows how attackers face two basic problems in these types of incidents: getting malicious code into a package that will eventually run inside an organization, and keeping that code hidden from developers or security tools. He said groups are increasingly building reputations as legitimate contributors over time. 

“Let me get my package deployed in as many places as possible so that I can spring the trap later,” said Anthony, describing the mindset behind the approach.

Researchers said generative AI has made it easier for attackers to produce code, documentation and contribution histories that look authentic. Anthony also described a technique in which attackers register package names that AI coding tools sometimes generate by mistake, so a developer following an AI suggestion could install malicious software without making any typing error of their own.

The findings come two years after a separate incident involving a program called xz-utils, in which an attacker spent time gaining the trust of the software’s maintainers before inserting a backdoor. Moses pointed to that case as an early example of a pattern now appearing “at scale” and tied to a nation-state.

Since that incident, separate groups have been running roughshod over open-source software. Another group known as TeamPCP has compromised and injected malicious code into more than 1,000 software packages over a four-month span this year.

Huntress warns about attack spree that hit 30 SonicWall customers in 2 days

Huntress researchers spotted an active and ongoing series of attacks targeting SonicWall VPN and firewall accounts, which compromised 30 organizations in less than two days, the company said in a threat advisory Tuesday.

The credential stuffing campaign started Saturday and grew rapidly, ultimately compromising 92 unique user accounts during the next 41 hours, according to Huntress. Researchers said the attacks were broad and opportunistic, hitting various SonicWall devices, rather than targeting specific types of organizations.

SonicWall hasn’t released a security advisory about the malicious activity as of press time. A spokesperson told CyberScoop the company is still investigating and hopes to have more information soon.

The attacks ended — at least for now — as abruptly as they began. The last compromise occurred Monday, according to Michael Tigges, principal tactical response analyst at Huntress.

“This fits campaign trends,” he said. “A rash of compromise will break out, followed by silence until the adversary rotates infrastructure.”

Attackers, which haven’t been identified, have also refrained from initiating any post-compromise activity, indicating the intrusions could be pre-positioning for future attacks. 

“With local network access, the sky is essentially the limit for most networks that do not have proper topology controls in place,” Tigges said.

Huntress’ observations are limited to telemetry it collects from its customers, meaning all of the identified victims were Huntress customers using SonicWall devices, so the number of organizations impacted could be greater. 

Researchers haven’t identified a root cause for the attacks, noting that they begin with authorized logins. Attackers are validating credentials against remote access portals to compromise as many vulnerable accounts as possible, the cybersecurity vendor and threat intelligence firm said. 

“This could be an aggregation of stealer malware logs, previously compromised SonicWall configuration files, or historic CVE compromise that resulted in more credentials than the adversary could use at the time,” Tigges said. 

In 2025, an undisclosed state-sponsored threat actor intruded SonicWalls’s cloud environment and stole firewall configurations of every customer. 

SonicWall customers have also been hit by a barrage of actively exploited zero-days, including a pair of zero-days that were exploited for three weeks before the vendor disclosed and patched the defects earlier this month, and previously disclosed defects in SonicWall devices for years. 

Seventeen defects affecting the vendor’s products have been added to CISA’s known exploited vulnerabilities catalog since late 2021. Ten of those defects are known to be used in ransomware campaigns, according to CISA, including a wave of about 40 Akira ransomware attacks between mid-July and early August 2025.

“Edge devices are one of the most targeted interfaces, comprising over 70% of active intrusions triaged by Huntress, including the overwhelming majority of ransomware deployments,” Tigges said. “Organizations that do not spend significant time architecting secure remote access solutions and networks that are resilient to edge-device compromise will likely continue to feel the burn in the coming months and years.”

AI-assisted security tools are finding more bugs, but the threat level has not changed

AI systems like Anthropic’s Project Glasswing and Microsoft’s MDASH are aiding in the discovery of vulnerabilities, filling the ever-growing pool of defects that defenders have to address before exploitation occurs. Yet, through the first half of 2026, these vulnerabilities were no more or less likely to be exploited than all vulnerabilities disclosed during that period, VulnCheck said in a report Tuesday. 

Concerns remain high about AI-discovered vulnerabilities fueling more attacks, but VulnCheck’s review of exploitation data shows that those fears are unfounded, at least so far. 

Patrick Garrity, security researcher at VulnCheck and report author, identified 1,061 vulnerabilities attributed to AI-assisted discovery during the first six months of the year. Of those vulnerabilities discovered by AI, 14 ( 1.3%) were exploited in the wild, a breakdown that aligns with the exploitation rate researchers observed across all vulnerabilities during the same period. 

“While AI-assisted vulnerability discovery clearly has value for both attackers and defenders, the data does not suggest that AI discovered vulnerabilities are inherently more likely to be exploited than those found through traditional methods,” Garrity wrote.

While AI’s contribution to actively exploited vulnerabilities was muted in the first half of the year, it’s too soon to assume that trend will continue. Moreover, none of these major vulnerability-hunting models were running for that full period. Project Glasswing rolled out in April, while Microsoft’s MDASH and OpenAI’s Daybreak were both unveiled in May.

The upward trend in Microsoft’s monthly Patch Tuesday indicates how much the floodgates might open through the remainder of the year as AI models discover more vulnerabilities. The company’s July security update contained an all-time-record of 622 vulnerabilities, besting the previous record-breaking June update with 206 vulnerabilities.

VulnCheck’s state of exploitation report also found that vulnerabilities were exploited much faster after CVE publication, speeding up from an average of 120 days in 2025 to 80 days during the first half of the year.

The intelligence firm also determined which technology categories were actively exploited most often. Content management systems accounted for nearly one-third of the 495 known exploited vulnerabilities VulnCheck identified during the first half of 2026. Network edge devices were responsible for almost 14%, followed by operating systems at nearly 9%, server software at 8%, and AI products — an emerging attack surface — at almost 6%.

Google’s solution to hacker name confusion? Yet another naming system

If you are a CISO, here is a new problem for the pile: Do I worry more about Sandworm Relic or Strawberry Tempest?

Last week, Google Threat Intelligence Group joined a list of rivals in changing how it names hackers, replacing years of split naming systems with a single set of code names built around memorable word pairs.

The company said in a blog post that the change merges two systems that had grown apart for years inside Google: Mandiant, the security firm Google bought in 2022, and its in-house Threat Analysis Group. Combining those units left Google with overlapping names for the same hacking groups, a problem the new system aims to fix.

“Threat tracking shouldn’t be an exercise in memorization, but rather one of intuition,” the post reads.

Each tracked group will now get a two-word name. The first word is a distinct term meant to be easy to recall, often pulled from names already used in past reporting on a specific group. When no such name exists, researchers will generate one at random and have analysts check it before use. The second word sorts each group by category, such as country of origin or motive. In Google’s published examples, CASTLE pairs with groups tied to China, ION with Iran, NEPTUNE with North Korea, RELIC with Russia, and COMET with financially motivated threat actors not tied to a nation-state.

The approach echoes one CrowdStrike has long been known for. CrowdStrike pairs a specific term with an animal tied to a country or motive: PANDA for China, BEAR for Russia, SPIDER for cybercriminals, JACKAL for hacktivists. Google’s system swaps the animals for words like CASTLE and NEPTUNE but follows the same basic structure, down to the argument for why it works: A two-part name carries more information than a bare country label or number, and it can change as attribution is fine-tuned.

Microsoft took its own turn at a naming overhaul in April 2023, dropping a system built on chemical elements, trees and volcanoes in favor of weather terms. Under that system, Typhoon marked China, Blizzard marked Russia, Sandstorm marked Iran, and Tempest marked financially motivated cybercriminals. The switch produced names that drew as much attention for their sound as their substance, among them Strawberry Tempest, Pumpkin Sandstorm and Pistachio Tempest. Industry experts bristled over the change, saying the names compared the groups to ice cream flavors or cocktails.

By 2025, the industry’s naming sprawl had become enough of a shared headache that two of the biggest players in it agreed to try to sort it out together. Microsoft and CrowdStrike announced a joint mapping effort in June of that year, pairing Microsoft’s weather names with CrowdStrike’s animal names for the same tracked groups, with Google, Mandiant and Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 also signed on to contribute. Both companies were careful to say the project was not an attempt to force the industry onto one naming system, just to make the existing ones easier to translate between.

Google‘s rollout starts with several dozen of the most actively tracked hacking groups, with more to follow over time. Older names will stay searchable within Google’s threat intelligence platform, alongside mappings to the MITRE ATT&CK framework and to the naming systems used by other vendors. 

The company says groups will keep carrying “UNC,” for uncategorized, if it is still too early to identify exactly where a group fits in this taxonomy.

Despite multiple takedowns, botnets continue to grow

Botnets powered by residential proxy networks are proliferating, enabling cybercriminals of all types to evade detection by blending in with seemingly legitimate traffic, Lumen Technology’s Black Lotus Labs said in a report Friday.

The global scale of botnets observed by Lumen is currently approaching 60 million victim IP addresses, Chris Formosa, senior lead information security engineer at Black Lotus Labs, told CyberScoop. Roughly 1 in 4 of those compromised IPs are based in the United States, and the true number of infected devices is much greater because there are networks beyond Lumen’s visibility and multiple devices are often unknowingly running a malicious proxy network on the same IP. 

Super-sized botnets are also gaining momentum, according to Lumen, with an average of 10 distinct botnets controlling their own populations of about 1 million active victims daily.

“The only reason these botnets keep getting more and more victims is because there is clearly a market. Aside from criminal activity, who wants access to millions of IPs regularly?” Formosa said. 

That demand for botnets fuels opportunities for growth, reselling, collaboration, and quick rebounds following massive disruptions.

IPIDEA, one of the largest residential proxy networks in operation when its infrastructure was disrupted by coordinated strikes in January, recovered at nearly half-strength within hours and earlier this surpassed its pre-disruption botnet size with a current botnet population of about 10 million IPs, researchers said.

“Their rebuild was eye-opening as they began to rebound from that interdiction,” Ryan English, information security engineer at Black Lotus Labs, told CyberScoop. “Even for how quickly some botnets can rebound, theirs was surprising. We’ve seen them all rebuild, but we haven’t seen anybody do it that fast.”

Meanwhile, botnets are continuously growing, as cybercriminals seek out the cover they provide, more cheap and poorly defended devices hit the market and vendors stop providing security updates for older but still usable products. 

“Your available pool for those proxy hunters grows every year, and it will continue to grow every year,” English said, adding that more than 1 billion devices are currently vulnerable and available to be unknowingly sucked up into botnets.

The challenge for defenders is lopsided, and while disruptions and seizures occur relatively often, botnet operators have formed a global supply chain with pathways that are difficult to break. 

“We have observed multiple residential proxy services collaborating to form what amounts to the largest cooperative network ever seen on the internet,” researchers wrote in the report.

Black Lotus Labs currently tracks more than 30 distinct malicious proxy botnet clusters, and most of those regularly boast more than 100,000 daily victims.

“Our understanding of the various botnets in this space, along with experience in multiple disruptions, leads us to a very important conclusion: taking down a single malicious proxy provider or their botnet in isolation is likely to result in a short-lived solution,” researchers wrote. 

“In recent years, the malicious proxy environment has essentially created the largest collective botnet currently active on the internet, capable of moving millions of IPs within hours to wherever they are needed,” they added. “Until the malicious proxy landscape is properly addressed and regulated on both the private industry and law enforcement sides, this issue will grow and, along with the DDoS botnet landscape, will most likely become a greater problem in the long term.”

Russian espionage group using novel Zimbra exploit to steal sensitive data from Western countries

A Russian state-sponsored threat group has been stealing sensitive data from governments and commercial organizations since July 2025 via a novel exploit in popular Linux-based enterprise software, U.S. authorities and cyber officials from more than a dozen other countries warned in a joint cybersecurity advisory Thursday.

Laundry Bear’s most recent espionage campaign involves the exploitation of a zero-day vulnerability in Zimbra Collaboration Suite that wasn’t patched until November 2025, five months after attacks were well underway, officials said. 

The exploit just requires a view — no clicks — and allows attackers to steal the previous 90 days’ worth of email, the account’s password, search history, the victim organization’s email directory, two-factor authentication tokens and other newly created passwords.

“The covert and persistent nature of this activity, along with the absence of any known financial extortion, almost certainly indicates this group’s involvement in espionage activities with Russian government backing,” officials wrote in the advisory. 

“Additionally, extensive Ukrainian targeting, prior to use against U.S. and other NATO allies, outlines an increasing trend within Russian cyber threat groups to target Ukrainian users first—both as a priority target and as a testbench for malicious cyber techniques before broader global deployment.”

The state-sponsored espionage group, also known as Void Blizzard, has compromised governments and organizations in the defense, education, energy, law enforcement, media, finance, transportation and technology sectors. 

Laundry Bear’s year-long campaign involving the exploitation of CVE-2025-66376 showcases more technical capabilities, including a custom JavaScript payload it delivers to targeted victims via phishing emails. The threat group could also likely adapt the novel data exfiltration and aggregation capability, dubbed “beehive,” to exploit other vulnerabilities, officials warned.

The defect’s medium-severity rating of 6.1 underscores the challenge defenders regularly confront in prioritizing patching schedules based on measure of severity alone.

The Russian state-supported group, which has been active since at least 2024, is still actively exploiting Zimbra Collaboration Suite instances that remain unpatched, officials said.

Authorities shared Thursday indicators of compromise, mitigation steps and urged organizations to update their vulnerable software.

“This campaign’s targeted victimology and limited exploitation capabilities likely indicate this group manually identifies and targets the victim organizations” by identifying organizations with public-facing infrastructure, officials wrote in the advisory.

Once a target is identified, Laundry Bear also likely compiles email addresses for users to target with the exploit via phishing emails. Officials did not identify specific victims or describe the volume of organizations already compromised.

The joint cybersecurity advisory was issued by the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Italy, Moldova, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and Sweden.

Malware is targeting AI tools in software development environments

Malware targeting AI coding assistants and software developers’ automated workflows is spreading into more environments with more capabilities, placing defenders at a growing disadvantage.

A malware strain dubbed Sandworm_Mode, first discovered by Socket in February, represents a growing threat to software development. According to a CrowdStrike report, the self-propagating worm can spread through code repositories with minimal detection, raising alarms about software supply chains.

The malware’s capabilities are extensive, but not especially unique compared to the series of supply-chain worms known as Shai-Hulud, and more recently Mini Shai-Hulud.

“This is the new trend,” Adam Meyers, senior vice president of counter adversary operations at CrowdStrike, told CyberScoop. “This is something we’re seeing more and more. It’s the new hotness right now.”

Sandworm_Mode targets and steals sensitive data, including credentials, keys and secrets that unlock paths to additional services and dependencies throughout the AI toolchain. This includes AI assistants, cloud providers, API keys for nine major LLM providers, CI/CD pipelines and automated systems that build, test and publish code.

These actions blend in with tens of thousands of other commands occurring daily in any given environment infused with AI development tools. 

“Trying to find the signal of something malicious happening is very difficult because there’s so much noise out there,” Meyers said. 

The worm also paces itself, setting multi-day delays to separate initial access from follow-on malicious activity — creating a gap in victims’ telemetry windows, which makes it even more challenging for defenders to detect and attribute the chain of infection properly. 

“AI agents are pulling down all of these different dependencies continuously throughout the day,” Meyers said. “When you’re looking downrange from the perspective of the security operations team, you’re just seeing everybody pulling down these dependencies, and these dependencies self-unpacking and executing, so it just gets really, really noisy to try to find something bad happening.”

The malware covers its tracks further with a bit of a mean streak, by automatically destroying compromised environments if it can’t spread or accomplish its objectives.

“It’s well thought-through, and well developed, so somebody spent some time caring and feeding this thing,” Meyer said.

Despite CrowdStrike’s four-month review of Sandworm_Mode, the cybersecurity firm has yet to gain a firm handle on its intent, but Meyers said it is designed to attain a strong foothold, which could enable long-term access.

CrowdStrike hasn’t determined who is responsible for the malware, yet Meyers said he doesn’t think TeamPCP, a threat group that’s been on a rampage through open-source software this year, is involved. 

“It could be a nation-state threat actor, or it could be an e-crime actor that’s looking to use this to then sell access to other organizations,” he said. “We don’t really know what the intention is.”

The state of Sandworm_Mode and whether it remains active is also unclear. CrowdStrike said it continues to observe recently active malicious supply-chain packages that follow similar but technically divergent patterns.

Ultimately, “the world has changed,” Meyers said, adding that many attackers are pursuing similar paths in the AI toolchain, requiring defenders and threat hunters to place a greater focus on this burgeoning mode of aggression.
